Ways to Improve Mental Health Within Families

What are the ways to improve mental health? This is a question asked by many of my clients. While the answer may vary from person to person, there are many common threads that run throughout our bodies and brains. If we can understand how they work and get in alignment with these rhythms we can create positive, productive ways to improve mental health.

Our bodies and brains are very similar in many ways.

Many people have noticed that when they are mentally stressed or frustrated that their bodies begin to play unusual rhythms. Those who suffer from sleep disorders, those who are anxious, those who have digestive problems, and those who are physically ill all report different rhythms and symptoms. In addition to daily activity rhythms, some people also have seasonal rhythms that impact their mental health and wellness.

Oxytocin is one chemical that has been found to be present in all living things.

Oxytocin is released in small amounts during times of emotional stress and it is present in the bloodstream when we are engaged in physical contact. In the case of anxiety and mental health challenges, the level of oxytocin production increases as the body senses a threat and reacts to it by releasing more of the hormone. As a result, we find that we are drawn to physical contact, to bonding with others and to having physical contact with our pets.

Is it possible to use physical contact comfort and oxytocin to improve mental health? Yes it is. We have already been using oxytocin for years to increase sexual pleasure. We know that it is an extremely effective antidepressant and is used on patients with minor depression. For the rest of us, we need to learn how to bring this same biological response into our lives and use it to provide greater mental health.

There are several ways to bring oxytocin into our lives and improve mental health. One way is through our pets. We love our mammals and we want to treat them as best we can but our animals are also our closest companions. It’s important that we take our furry friends out for walks, give them lots of attention and play with them. By strengthening our bond with our furry friends through physical activity, we are reaping the benefits of oxytocin through cardiovascular health.

The other ways to improve mental health within our family is through our commitment to one another.

If we have an established family structure, we know that there are a number of ways we can help strengthen the bonds between us and provide emotional support. If you feel that you are lacking support from your partner or spouse, it is important that you make a plan to increase your bonding and your connection with each other.

Finally, another of the ways to improve mental health within our families is through our commitment to ourselves. If we spend time taking care of ourselves physically and emotionally, we will find that the quality of our relationships is enhanced as well. That means that we are less likely to develop addictions or unhealthy behaviors in our lives. If we have an addiction in our body, such as smoking, we should quit for our own sake and the sake of those around us. We owe it to our kids to spend some time taking care of ourselves so that we can spend more quality time with them.

These are just two of the ways to improve mental health within our families. Every day we can choose to either support our loved ones or hinder their mental health. Choose wisely. Your kids will thank you!
